A bit of a squash

It's a squash. Watercolour (main image) with pencil study. This was done for my monthly art group challenge on the subject of 'Botanical'. We were privileged to have a demonstration by the incredible Jon Evans (botanical artist) the previous month and he explained what was meant by botanial illustrations so I thought I'd have a go. I love squashes, they are really fascinating because they come in such extraordinary variety and you can eat them as well - brilliant! (Spicy soup, or just ...

Minster Roofscape

Watercolour study. Roofscape of York from the city wall with the Minster rising up over it all. I love this image, it's so majestic. Every step along the route of the city wall affords a photo opportunity and inspiring views from panoramic sweeps of the city, to an intimate glimpse of back gardens, cluttered roofscapes and interesting perspectives.

St Mary’s Abbey

Watercolour study. Detail of St Mary's Abbey, York. The city of York has so many interesting sites to visit whatever you're interested in, and you'll probably discover a whole bunch of stuff you didn't realise you WERE interested in until you get there! The ruins are in the York Museum Gardens and I have visited these beautiful grounds when they have been covered in snow, flood water, autumn leaves and blazing sunshine. Just stunning. I recommend a visit. Afterwards, take a boat trip ...

The Mandalorian

The Mandalorian - Before and After Watercolour. Really loved painting this! Just fancied doing side-by-side images of Din Djarin pre-Beskar and after he's kitted out with the cool shiny stuff! So much stunning Mandalorian artwork out there and what an awesome series - stunning settings, traditional iconic Star Wars feel to everything and THAT music score! It was always going to be a big ask to portray the Mandalorian in a way that matched up to all of that, but Pedro totally smashed ...

Fairy-tale Creatures

Watercolour. This was for our local art group monthly challenge on the theme of 'Fairy-tale Creatures'. Actually quite hard to think of creatures from fairy-tales and I'm being really pendantic here. First of all, I am excluding all fantasy tales and absolutely NOT including fine works such as The Lord of the Rings which is in a class of it's own. Fairy-tales are stories like Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, anything including in those compilations by Ruth Manning-Sanders and so on, ...

Winter Landscape

Winter Landscape - Watercolour (34cm x 24cm) Art group monthly challenge theme for February. Currently doing a snow and ice themed painting in acrylic for Stranger In A Strange Land (see 'News') so I thought I'd do this one in watercolour which lends itself to this concept and also makes a nice change. Bit of fantasy fun.
